We have this tradition down here, in winter (June/July for us), we dress like peasants or hillbillies (just like the fellow you use to cover the naughty covers) and we used to release paper balloons into the starry night (it’s illegal nowadays, for the sake of the forests). It’s a reminiscence of Portuguese harvest festivals. The typical music is basically played on the harmonica, and it sounds a bit like zydeco. Mario Zan (never heard of) plays “O balão vai subindo” (Up goes the balloon), probably the best known “Festa Junina” known. “Up goes the ballon, down pours the drizzle, the sky is so beautiful, the night is so pleasant. Saint John, light up the bonfire of my heart….” Fireworks, hot wine with ginger, pastries, skipping the bonfire. It’s fun.
Well that is a nice story but the truth is that Mario’s articular take on this music was really best heard at a distance and that’s why he was tied to a balloon and sent alot.
