Julia, Julia
LP cover lover Ruben, writes us: “Hello LP COVER LOVERS! I love this cover – maybe it is in your collection, maybe not. Great site you have. Regards.”
“Porgy and Bess” Dianne Carroll and The Andre Previn Trio United Artists Records
I don’t think of Ms. Carroll so much for her jazz vocal chops as much as her beauty and the TV show she starred in – Julia. I think she broke the color barrier as a black woman starring in her own series (and she was a single mom on the show), but that didn’t mean much to me. At 8, she just seemed cool and I was in love with her. Thanks for reminding me Ruben.
I LIKE IKE
IKE QUEBEC “TENOR SAX” BLUE NOTE Set 102. Ike Quebec (ts) Roger Ram Ramirez (p) Tiny Grimes (g) Milt Hinton (b) J.C. These sides were released “for the jukebox market” in the late fifties as 45’s by Blue Note records and lead to new session work and some brilliant albums as a leader in 1961 -62. His comeback was cut short by lung cancer in 1963.
Newman’s own
Joe Newman: “Counting Five in Sweden” With Basie-ites Frank Wess, Al Grey, Nat Pierce, Eddie Jones and Sonny Payne. Label: Metronome 15018 12″ LP 1959 Design: Stig Söderqvost Photo: Bengt H. Malmqvist
Joe Newman with his (then) new wife, Rigmor Newman. This cover was pulled from distribution so as not to offend with the image of a happy and happily integrated couple. His tune “To Rigmor,” (recorded around the same time) was dedicated to her. In the early 90’s Rigmor married Harold Nicholas (of the Nicholas Brothers).
