“Count Your Blessings” Willie Sutherland w Frank Coutts Grampian Records, Scotland. (1972) From LP cover lover Dave Bruce: By way of a little “thank you” for your super site, here’s a scan of my best candidate for a “wake up sweating” record. I rescued it from a charity shop. If you weren’t scared of Scotchmen before this, you should have been.
From LP cover lover, Jeff Missinne: Here’s another of my favorite past pin-ups, DONA DRAKE. Cute, vivacious, exotic, and frankly sexy as hell, in mostly B movies from the 40’s and early 50’s. Dona was the singing leader of an all-girl band in the late 30’s, under the name Rita Rio, and appeared then in a handful of short subjects. (It was typical for her to sing a jive version of “La Cucaracha” while leading her band with a baton in her left hand and pulling up her gown with her right so she could tap dance at the same time…) She’s got a turntable AND a mike here, so I’m guessing the machine she’s using is a disc recorder/player like a Wilcox-Gay Recordette or similar. (That’s for those anoraks who are looking at the turntable and not Dona!)

LP cover lover, Jeff Missinne and Jerold Kress, of the web site The Crown Records Story provided us with this: “Latin Twist” Louis Martinellie and the Continentals Crown Records. Most interesting because the model here is 50’s pin-up queen and TV’s Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, Irish McCalla. Hard to tell from the photo (looks a little like one of the Mary Tyler Moore covers), but below is a behind-the-scenes photo of the Latin Twist cover session courtesy of Sean McIntyre (Irish McCalla’s son).
Jerold Kress ID’d the two guys in the photo; left in suit w/cigarette is Joe Bihari of Crown Records; right in shirtsleeves is Joseph (or Josef) Tauber, photographer. “Photo from the estate of Irish McCalla, and McCalla Enterprises, Inc.” (McCalla Enterprises, incidentally, was a company Irish and her sister started in the 70’s to merchandise prints and ceramic plates of Irish’s work as a painter and illustrator. Her talent was as impressive as her beauty, and friends who met her said she was also one of the nicest folks around.) Thanks Jeff, Jerold and Sean!
This is Irish McCalla, TV’s original “Sheena, Queen of the Jungle,” at home with her hi-fi. Thanks to long-time LP cover lover, Jeff for sending this one in and writing, “I checked the whole category to make sure you didn’t already have it…tough job, huh?” That’s a lot of cheesecake to get through Jeff!
