   To be fair, a quartet usually has four singers and a piano player…

   The fact is that artists who were styled as quartets would remain quartets or trios or whatever-even with extra members taken on later.
   Even in the U K a jazz band like the Temperance Seven would have 8 members but the first lot were a septet
