Polka record covers offer a world of laughs. And there are so many of them. There is a polka for every occasion and every musical fad led to a barrel of polka records. Seems to me that this one just states the obvious. I’ll be sharing many others with you in the future.

Ain’t Misbehavin’: Fats Waller’s Hits and Jazz Broadway Jazz Orchestra Halo
Bettie Page was on the cover of 3 Lps in fifties. The most famous uses the Bunny Yeager shot with the tigers, the other is cropped version of this photo. This is the sexiest and hardest to find. Halo is a great label for cheesecake covers. It was a budget label with smaltzy pop music and hits covered by orchestras. But many remain prime examples of early LPs with sexy models and pin-up photography. It would be incredible if anyone unearthed another lp from this period with Bettie on the cover. Maybe there’s one in another country that will show up some day.

The Lurch Ted Cassidy Capitol Records
It’s amazing how many of TV’s supporting character actors of the sixties and seventies managed to get a record deal. I love finding a record by one of the TV stars I grew up with, especially obscure ones and ones that show them on the cover in character. This is a 45 picture sleeve. I don’t think he made a full-length lp.

Salsa Na’ Ma’ Charlie Palmieri y su Charanga “La Duboney” Alegre
Wow. This is good on various levels. First of all, I love homemade soup. I love latin music. And the chef is hot. I spent about year pulling lp covers to frame and put up in my kitchen, this one made the cut on the first round.

Éxitos al Estilo de Fred Musart
This is a great 1950’s 10″ lp from South America. I love the type and the illustration of the hands. Musart was a great label for cover art. This style of including the frame in the cover was used by other labels at various times as well. Mostly I like this one because I like Fred. I framed this and gave it to him. Fred is Fred Seibert who knows more than most about art and records and cartoons and what’s cool. Check out Frederator.com for a world of neat stuff.

Mr. Bat Sings (w/ Mrs. L. E. Tweten, accompanist)
This is one of the weirdest private press lps. The cover is amazing and has nothing to do with the generic xian music within. Clowns are creepy sometimes, but this is John Wayne Gacey scarey.

Philosophy of the World The Shaggs Third World Records
Here’s perhaps the most celebrated outsider record and a true musical discovery. A self-produced, family band from the 1960’s. Susan Orleans wrote about the group in a New Yorker piece and the lp was reissued sometime in the early nineties. Original copies are rare and sell for $1,000 and up. I think only 1,000 were pressed with most thrown out in a dumpster in Boston.

Eyes of the Spectre Chaino
Chaino put out some cool records in the fifties. He was a percussionist and some of his stuff is “exotic” African rhythms and some is more jazzy. This kind of exploitation cover art was popular at the time for Eisenhower-era suburbanites looking for something wild (but safe). A stunning illustration and a prime example of its type. The very rare Spectre label had a very scary eye logo around the spindle hole.
