Johnny “Guitar” Watson was the original “Gangster of Love” and a godfather of funk. His records from the fifties were distinquished by his funky guitar (check out “Hot Just Like TNT”). This early seventies comeback lp featured the hit “A Real Mother For Ya” and a solid gold cover that defined ghetto fabulous for the stroller set. Buy this record and then get “It’s All About the Dollar Bill,” “Ganster of Love,” “Ain’t That A Bitch” and a great album with Larry “Short Fat Fannie” Williams called “Two for the Price of One”.

The girl groups of the sixties had so much style and the Marvelettes, one of the great groups of Motown, not only made great soul records (“Here I Am Baby,” “Don’t Mess With Bill,”” Please Mr. Postman,” etc.) they always looked cool. This best of compilation is from Holland.

Urania was a great cover label in the 1950’s and put out some great traditional jazz as well. This is a cool, sexy chick alone in an alley in the light of a street post after dark. A cigarette hanging on her lips. Looks like a pulp JD paperback cover.

I have a collection of records with titles that start “Songs of”. I’ve never seen a gay dog. Or heard any gay dog songs. But you have to love this cover of a man and the dog he loves. I love my dog too.

What a beautiful Jayne Mansfield cover from Japan. I collect Jayne Mansfield covers. There are maybe a dozen US covers (“Amor” and “Speak Low” being the best), but it’s always exciting to discover ones from other countries. Japan issued some other really great ones that top my “want list.”

I found this online at another site like this one that shares record covers. I’ve never seen it, but given the little dog, the turntable and 45’s, the stuffed animal and the sixties girl with big hair laying on the bed…well I gotta get one! Check out Dennis Catron‘s cheesecake collection!
