Cold Warriors

“The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” (And Other TV Themes). David McCallum (l) and Robert Vaughn (r), the stars of the hit sixties tv spy series “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” The show ran for four seasons (1964-68). A spin-off, “The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.” aired one season (1966) and starred Stephanie Powers. I just learned (or was reminded) that the acronym stands for “United Network Command for Law and Enforcement.”! Cool.

Thanks Joe for this nice “concept” 45. I wonder if they had one for Matthew. Like getting that “license plate” for your first bike. Joe also has a cool blog called ArtLung

The Riddler unmasked

riddler45_2.jpgriddler452.jpg

Riddle me this: Frank Gorshin was more than just The Riddler on Batman.   He was in some classic fifties exploitation, b-movies including “Hot Rod Girl,” “Runaway Daughters,” “Dragstrip Girl,” and “Invasion of the Saucer Men”.     He also brought the character Sammy Glick to life in the broadway production of “What Makes Sammy Run.”     He died in 2005, two days after his final performance in an episode of CSI.

Hirt’s so good

“The Horn Meets the Hornet” – what a concept!   I imagine the Green Hornet going backstage after an Al Hirt concert on Bourbon Street in New Orleans to meet when this candid photo was snapped.

Capt. Kangaroo meets Stokowski

captainkangaroo.jpg

Like many my age, I spent my first TV hours with Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Greenjeans.   Here’s a nice one of many lps and 45’s featuring Bob Keeshan, the Capt.

Soupy Sales Sez Do the Mouse

img_1224.JPG

At one time Soupy Sales was very big. Beginning in the 1950’s he spent three decades on TV, talking to kids and often getting a pie in the face. He cut a few records. This one was his entry into the early sixties dance fad explosion — “the mouse.”

On a more serious note, there’s an incredible clip on youtube of Soupy introducing the great jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown on his show in 1956!
