Lucia Pamela, Spaced Outsider

img_1932.JPG

“Into Outer Space” with Lucia Pamela Gulfstream Records (1969). Read the liner notes here. Read Lucia’s NY Times Obit for more.

Lucia insists Into Outer Space was recorded on the moon. Not only that, she’s not entirely happy with lunar acoustics. “The air is so thin everything sounds different up there”, she once noted in an annoyed tone.

How to explain the sound of Into Outer Space? For starters, one critic called Lucia the “missing link between Sun Ra and the Shaggs”. That’s a start, but it’s nowhere near the complete story. Lucia isn’t nearly derivative enough to be neatly pigeonholed between other artists, no matter how out-there they may be.

Approximate the following and come to your own conclusions. Into Outer Space with Lucia Pamela is the sound of a ragtime band lost in another galaxy, hopelessly whacked out on alien hallucinogens, desperately trying to pull together history’s strangest concept album.

Which is exactly what Into Outer Space is — a startlingly weird concept album.

The Swedes smell of success

“Out-a Space” The Spotnicks in London. (1961) Oriole Records. This is the first lp by The Spotnicks who were Sweden’s first internationally famous rock band. The band’s outer-space-inspired, instrumental surf-rock climbed toward the top of the European, Australian and Japanese charts in the early 1960’s. The band has since released 42 albums and sold more than 18 million records!

Great books

“Classics Story Teller” on the Golden Records’ Great Literature Series.   A record tie-in to the comic book series “Classics Illustrated”   I was a fan of these comic books and was introduced to many of the great books by reading them.   I also read Casper, Archie, Captain America, Fantatic Four, Aquaman, Batman, Superman, Richie Rich and Horror Movie magazines.   Then I found a Playboy while doing my paper route and soon after sold my comic book collection.

Incredible! Arranged and conducted by Stuart Phillips and his Orchestra Harry Revel’s “Music From Outer Space” (1955) MGM Records   Revel’s previous three albums (“Music Out of the Moon,” “Perfume Set to Music,” and “Music for Peace of Mind”) were classic space age/exotica Theremin records, this one leaves out the theremin and is mostly wordless chorus with Orchestra.
