Hot little mama

Sound-O-Rama Presents The Windy City Four   “Don’t Let the Devil Ride”   This is a very rare soul-gospel lp that goes for hundreds of dollars when it seldomly comes on the market.   For me the value is in the cover – I’m a sucker for a hot girl in a devil costume.

Heavenly horns

Cool Gabriels Groove Records   (1956)   Andy Warhol illustration and design.

This rare and longtime hard-to-find album was conceived to show how enjoyable cool trumpets can sound. Featured “Cool Gabriels” are Conte Candoli, Nick Travis, Don Stratton, Bernie Glow, Phil Sunkel, Al de Risi and Dick Sherman.   With a rhythm section of Elliot Lawrence (p), Burgher Jones (b), Sol Gubin (d)

The tune contained in this album were selected specifically to give each “Gabriel” a chance to show his stuff and also to demonstrate the various moods that could be brilliantly exemplified with a trumpet ensemble. The fun that the musicians had making these recordings is apparent on every selection.

The Devil’s Hand

The Theme from “The Devil’s Hand” Original Soundtrack on Chess Records.   (1962)

A beside-the-point Batman connection:   Neil Hamilton (the ironic police commissioner in the BATMAN TV show) is highly amusing here as Mr. Lamont, a bloodthirsty devil figure extraordinaire. He runs a creepy doll shop during the day, but holds satanic blood rituals in the back room at night!

Devil dog

I love crazy classical music covers.   Like a desperate attempt to market “serious” music with jackets that might appeal to a larger audience of regular, simple folks.   For example, here’s some guy in a devil costume with a hot dog on a record of overtures by Offenbach, Rossini and others.   Thanks ABC Westminster.

Road trip… TO HELL!

“A great way to live…a tragic way to die” Thanks, Earl Nightingale. Reminds me of those drivers ed. films that scare you straight. I think the fatal mistake was breaking out the accoustic guitar and singing the complete Air Supply songbook. That just pissed God off.
