How does this work?

Presumably, there were points where the groove split into two (I’m guessing 7 points on each side to make the 256 stories) so that the needle could go one way or another, playing a different segment with each choice. Marillion did this with the vinyl version of their 1994 album Brave.
The only problem with this idea is that the needle would tend to wear the grooves it plays more often, so there would be a risk of it wearing a path that would end up giving the kiddies the same story every time, or at least very few variations.

That is ever so amazing!

“monty python’s matching tie and handkerchief” (1973) was similar; the second side of the Lp had two parallel sets of grooves and would play differently depending on how the needle dropped onto the vinyl. compounding the confusion was that both sides were labeled “side B”

Hello — I am VERY interested in buying a copy of ‘The Ever-So-Many Amazing
Adventures of Johnny’ — I’ve recently missed two on eBay. Please contact me if you have one for sale — this record is a very important part of my childhood!
Thank you!
Sincerely,
