Silhouette Segments compiles radio spots by John Rydgren, the head of the American Lutheran Church . His radio show, “Silhouettes”, was the voice of hippies for God before anyone ever heard the word, “Jesus freak”. His psychedelic Christian Dj patter, in the style of Ken Nordine, is backed by fuzzy guitars and Summer Of Love grooves. A heady mix of peace, love, sex & Jesus. This and 100 other rare and unusual records from the LP Cover Lover archives are being put up for auction on eBay beginning on Monday, April 13th!

Although his radio career began in the mid-west, “Brother John” Rydgren moved out to Los Angeles in 1972. He immediately became a popular oddball personality on oldies radio, a format which had just begun to take off. He would frequently intersperse some of his quasi-religious “word jazz” in between records. Sometimes, if the oldie was an instrumental, he would actually talk over it. This album (which is also up on YouTube in it’s entirety), contains a couple of examples. I’m not certain whether or not Bob Crewe ever collected any royalties for the likes of this, but here’s a typical example:
