Art Pepper Returns A cool cover to an Art Pepper EP on Sonet Records (UK). Art Pepper’s autobiography “Straight Life” is a great read about the West Coast jazz scene and the alto legend’s addiction to heroin, prison stints and memorable comebacks. I believe this cover photo is by Bill Claxton.

Very cool! Never seen this Art Pepper cover before. Perhaps he’s making the long hard climb to his next fix…or recovery!

Comment from my brother who is also a big fan of his.
“By the way the photo of art was taken for his meets the rhythm section album with Wynton Kelly and the boys. It was shot in Echo Park in LA. At the time ol artie was really fucking up as you know. He was living with Dianne and just barley hanging on, not playing, committing low level theft crimes to support his habit. I heard him describe when they took that shot. He could barely make it up the hill.”

Interesting to see this photo as a colorized image.
Here’s Claxton’s original print.
And here are Claxton’s comments about the shot.
