Bobbejaan was in fact a Belgian singer, who also enjoyed some international successes in the fifties. He was the first continental European to play in the Grand Ole Opry (1953), performed in the Ed Sullivan Show and represented Belgium in the European song contest of 1958. He also opened an amusement park (“Bobbejaanland”) in 1961 which exists to this day. In 2008 he released a comeback record (“Bobbejaan”) that got good reviews in the Belgian press (check the song “verankerd” on youtube). Bobbejaan passed away in 2010, the day after his 85th birthday.
