Where’s “AAAAAAAAAlvin!”?
Wycote Records’ “4 Chipmunks”
Steven Wright writes … “Your “witch doctor” entry reminded me of this; this Lp was initially credited to “the 4 chipmunks” before legal pressure forced them to the less plagiaristic “wyncote squirrels”…wyncote was notrious for this — they issued an album called “beatlemania” by the liverpools and “monkey business” by the chimps as blatant ripoffs. Btw, after their first Lp, david seville allegedly used women to voice his chipmunks”

I like how after they’ve named a few songs they just print “and others”. Not an enthusiastic “and many more!”, just some… others.

Actually that Wyncote album by the Liverpools was really recorded by the Dovells, and it was in STEREO, which none of their Parkway hits were. It was intended to be a ripoff, but turned out to be very collectible!

that was the dovells? i always thought “you can’t sit down” was a great song, but i always had to fold over the left & right channels because every version i had was in really bad electronically repro-ed stereo. another wynecote shot was a knock-off of “bach’s greatest hits” by the swingle singers — wynecote’s version was “bach’s BIGGEST hits” by the single sWingers.

I’ve done half-speed “checks” on some of the later Chipmunks records…even their “guest appearance” with Canned Heat…and it was definitely Ross Bagdasarian doing all the vocals right up to the end. It is true, though, that the “Alvin & The Chipmunks” records produced by his son in more recent years have been sung by (mostly male) studio singers, mainly in Nashville!

This record was not made by The Dovells. It was made by The 4 Js. They are friends of mine. If you slow it down, you can pick out Junior Pirollo’s voice.
