“Stereo Compatible” as shown in this photo was a DGG copyrighted logo, so it doesn’t matter what country it was in. This is not the only photo I’ve seen of life in what was supposedly always a backwater nation.
i tried to zoom in on it, but it became too blurry; but it did strike me that it was the deutsch grammophon logo above “stereo compatible” as well. however, i wonder if it was copyrighted as i have also seen the phrase used on capitol/EMI LPs in the late ’60s.
Yes, that is the Deutsche Grammophon logo. The “Stereo Compatible” above it is in their typeface as well. That’s because DGG/POLYDOR recordings, until the very late 50’s, were not true Stereo (not unlike Duophonic for CAPITOL releases). The main point is that there is no reason why this cannot be in Kabul. Before the Soviets, the Taliban, the Americans, etc., Afghanistan tried as hard as it could to be mainstream, but it has over 2000 years of history of other people invading it because it’s “in the way” towards riches in other countries.

I’m suspicious. The signs in that photo are in English.
Mohammed Zahir Shah was the ruler from 1933 – 1973. Pashto was the official language, with Dari being used in business and government.
