Basketball Jones
Some of you may remember the Saturday morning animated cartoon series The Harlem Globetrotters as I surely do. (1970-1972 on CBS) Hanna-Barbera meets Meadowlark Lemon and “Curley” Reese and the high-flyin’, high-fivin’, slam-dunkin’est squad ever to cross 125th street! And don’t forget their fictional bus driver and manager Granny, and Dribbles, their dog mascot. Josie and the Pussycats, Hanna-Barbera’s other 1970 series, premiered 30 minutes earlier on the same day and network.
This soundtrack album, The Globetrotters, was produced by Jeff Barry and released in 1970 by Kirshner Records. It includes tunes heard in episodes of the series (during the basketball game sequences). Don Kirschener served as music supervisor for both the series and the record. Globetrotter frontman Meadowlark Lemon was the only member of the team to be actually involved with the project, adding occasional background vocals to some tracks. Among those actors also providing voices for the series are Scatman Crothers, Stu gilliam and Eddie (“Rochester”) Anderson.

“Oh yes… I can remember the “good ol days”, glued in front of the T.V. nearly every Saturday morning, wearing pajamas and eating my favorite breakfast cereal while watching cartoons from 6 AM until noon… Then for lunch, American Bandstand, Soul Train…”
BTY… “Basketball Jones” is listed on the Cheech And Chong LP “Los Cochinos @#!!*”. Funny thing is… that LP has a similar kind of “cover gimmick” too, like the one you’ve pictured Mr. Coverlover.

Ja vol about… sie GOOD old days, where we could laugh at and with one another without the PC POLICE, eh? Where have you gone “Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, Johnny Carson and Don Rickles?” Kids today are too busy being materialistic, texting and chatting on cell phones 24 x 7! God forbid they laugh…

NICE! I grew up with that show as a kid and had no idea there was a record for it. makes me think there should almost be a category for 70s Saturday morning cartoon separate from “Kiddies.”

Watched that show many times for many hours, and I consider myself a better person for it. Meadowlark and Curly, too much!

Not only was the voice talent for the show noteworthy, but the vocals for the songs were supplied by former members of the Cadillacs and the Drifters.
The album is surprisingly good; no bad cuts.

I actually owned that record. I think I sent away some number of box tops or something. Wish I still had it.
BTW, that’s Curly Neal, not Reese.

That is a cool record! I love basketball jones. It reminds me of John Stockton from the Jazz.
