Newman’s own
Joe Newman: “Counting Five in Sweden” With Basie-ites Frank Wess, Al Grey, Nat Pierce, Eddie Jones and Sonny Payne. Label: Metronome 15018 12″ LP 1959 Design: Stig Söderqvost Photo: Bengt H. Malmqvist
Joe Newman with his (then) new wife, Rigmor Newman. This cover was pulled from distribution so as not to offend with the image of a happy and happily integrated couple. His tune “To Rigmor,” (recorded around the same time) was dedicated to her. In the early 90’s Rigmor married Harold Nicholas (of the Nicholas Brothers).

I can see the look on dear ol’ mom and dad in 1959 at the sight of this cover. Eegads! The horror!
If there’s anything risque about this cover, it’s that statue. What the hell is it doing?

The previous comment stated exactly what I was thinking- the statue is bizarre! Yeah 50 years ago I can imagine this cover did stir up some controversy. I had not seen this cover before, and thanks for sharing it with us!

What, if I pull your finger I will hear a sound like a trumpet?

The statue appears to be drinking from a wineskin. My guess is it’s a variation on the “Drunken Satyr” theme, popular in ancient Greek & Roman sculpture. (Yeah, this is Sweden, but Classical culture is part of the scene in Svensk as well.)
