The title track was used in the early ’90s movie “A River Runs Through It” (directed by Robert Redford). Interestingly enough, although I’m a fan of ragtime music, I wasn’t sure until now if “Muskrat Ramble” was a pre-existing piece or if it was composed for the movie. The little bit of it that we can hear in the film has a very “generic” sound to it, with none of the clever syncopation I tend to associate with ragtime. (In other words, to me it sounded like something Scott Joplin or Joseph Lamb would not have bothered publishing. Maybe a lesser composer would, if given the opportunity, though.) Oddly enough, the movie did well enough that for several years afterward one couldn’t watch a figure skating or dance competition without hearing “Muskrat Ramble” at least once!

Nicholas,
Muskrat Ramble is a Jazz CLASSIC. Composed by Kid Ory and made famous by Louis Armstrong in the 1920s.
