Paul Gonsalves “Cookin”

img_3632.JPG

I love Paul Gonsalves.   Maybe first from hearing and reading the liner notes to the incredible “Duke Ellington at Newport 1956” record when his 27-chorus solo on “Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue” turned the staid New England patrons into a frenzied crowd.   But then from digging deeper into his smaller group sessions on Impulse (“Tell It The Way It Is”) and Jazzland (“Gettin’ Together”).   Also great is his “Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick” (on Vocalion).   This is a great one on Argo, which was a great jazz (and soul) label.

“Cookin” (also 1956) features Clark Terry, William Jones, Jimmy Woode and Sam Woodyard.

The Wonder of it all

lp-hes-more-than-enough.jpg

Thanks to Margaret Still for sending us Vicki Jamison “He’s More Than Enough”

I think this refers to Jesus. Maybe you don’t need bread if you have religion. Does that make sense? She looks like Nancy Reagan. Just Say No to bread!

A really big shoe

durval-vieira-o-sapatao-1981.jpg

This from our friend in Brazil Zeco Louro:   The album title is “O SAPATAO,” which is Brazilian slang for “lesbian”.   “Sapato” means “shoe” and “Sapatao” is how we say “a big shoe”.   I think the idea is that Durval is asking the girl if she is a Sapatao, a lesbian.”

Well I guess that explains it. But it’s still weird.

“I shot a moose…”

img_3606.JPG

In the 1950s Woody Allen began a career in show business as a comedy writer for tv shows like Your Show of Shows and The Garry Moore Show. By the 60s, he’d graduated to performing his material in stand-up venues across America. For a handful of these years (before embarking on a career of movie making) several of his live performances were captured on disc. This the second of Woody’s three records of stand-up material was recorded at The Shadows in Washington, D.C., April 1965.
