This is a beautiful example of a 1950’s cheesecake cover from Liberty records. The dramatic lighting, the stylish pose, the shag rug, the cigarette smoke – even the cool lamp – set the stage for a record that promises seductive, easy-listening, bachelor pad music.

George Petty was one of the great magazine illustrators of pin-up girls and cheesecake models from the 30’s – 50’s. His “Petty girls” from the pages of Esquire were used on numerous covers in the fifties, most notably on this series of releases from Decca records. There was even a movie called “The Petty Girl” with Bob Cummings as Petty and Melanie Griffith’s mom, Tippi Hedron as one of his “girls”.
I also love the little line drawing of the guy with the stack of lps at the bottom. There used to be a mural of this on the wall of a record store. I think “Record Surplus” in LA? Anyone?

Everyone needs a hook I guess. I haven’t listened, but the music probably stinks.

There are maybe a dozen albums from the sixties that feature Playboy bunnies. Some are comedians and performers at the Playboy clubs like this one. Playboy branched out to become a label for a short time in the early seventies (I think Barbie Benton might have been the biggest name they had. She was Hef’s girl at the time.), but I like the classic look and feel of the early years. I’ll be back with others.
