Inspired

img_0133.JPG

This would seem to be an outtake from the photo shoot, but it’s moody and intriguing. Is the model waiting for “inspiration” between shots? Warm color and soft back lighting and shadow make this a really elegant cover on the South American RCA label.     Orquestra Tipica “La Plata”

Pachucko Hop

img_0088.JPG

This is on the rare Combo Records label. The instrumental “Pachucko Hop” was a hit for Chuck Higgens. The cover design and photography are by Frank Donovan. This was a controversial cover that showed more skin than was allowed in the late fifties. Good thing he had a neck tie in the studio at least. This record in good shape goes for a few hundred dollars.

Japanese nude with checkered lights

img_0491.JPG

The Japanese put out many covers with nudes that were artfully posed and photographed and art directed. Not all of them, but the ones from the fifties and sixties were very stylish and beautiful “figure studies”. Here’s a nice example on Polydor, which under it’s American imprint would never have put out a nude cover in the US.

A crack in the case

batman.jpg

This one is really bizarre. Putting a comic book superhero on a cover with a naked woman is something you won’t see in most record store racks. Good thing as this could freak out a young Batman fan. The drawing of Batman is bad and the nude unattractive giving the overall presentation a sleazy, low-budget appeal.

Down in the basement

Blowfly Disco  Blowfly  Weird World Records

When was the last time you were at a party like this? I won’t file this under “cheesecake”. Blowfly made lots of crude, offensive and funny records on the Weird World label. His cover “art” is in a class of its own. There are many black comedy records that are “adult” or “risque” from the fifties, sixties and seventies. I like this one
