An “incredibly strange” record and example of the celebrity “Golden Throats” series that has washed up stars taking on the hits of the day to usually disasterous or “so bad, it’s good” effect. This one is on Tower records, which put out some cool sixties rock and roll and some biker and surf soundtracks and the group isn’t bad musically. “Day Tripper” is a classic.

So…a little background on the backup group for Mae. Guitarist David Allen started his first band in high school The Offbeats who recorded one single. They then became The Chyldren and recorded two singles in 1966, changed the name to Somebody’s Chyldren and somehow ended up two albums with Mae West, this one and a Christmas album. After a few years and a couple of line up changes they became The Mariane and recorded a couple of singles in 1968. The Mariane then broke up arouind 1970, David then moved to the UK and started Carmen, sort of a progressive flamenco rock group, which also had as members Angela Allen(no relation), Brian and John Glascock, Paul Fenton and Roberto Amaral. They recorded three great albums, appeared on The Midnight Special. Carmen disbanded in 1975, David returned to the states and did some session work and recorded sporadically, Angela Allen did some background vocals for Jethro Tull. John Glascock joined Jethro Tull, Brian Glascock would eventually join The Motels, Paul Fenton would work with T. Rex and still tours with a T. Rex tribute band and Roberto Amaral became a flamenco teacher/choreographer in L.A.
