Sax on the beach
Nino Tempo’s “Rock ‘n Roll Beach Party” Liberty Records.
An album of emotions, including the classics (“Love” and “Hate”) as well as the seldom heard “Gay”, “Frustration” and (my favorite) “Hysteria”.
Chakachas on Blue Elephant Records. Straight outta Belgium. “Jungle Fever” is an insane cut that features heavy drums, choppy guitar, and a stop/start action that’s peppered with sounds of female pleasure! This was their only hit which almost reached the top 10 in 1972. It was brought back for the movie “Boogie Nights” (think Heather Graham as “Roller Girl”).
Goofy Grape and the Whole Funny Face Gang “Sings Awful” On Mark 56 Records. A Pillsbury (Funny Face) Production. Backed by a killer studio session group including Rootin’ Tootin’ Raspberry, Loudmouth Lime, Jolly Olly Orange, Freckle Face Strawberry, Choo-choo Cherry and Lefty Lemon.
(Editor’s Note: The voice of Goofy Grape and his whole gang is the work of one man – Paul Frees, who unbelievably was also the Pillsbury Doughboy, George Harrison AND John Lennon in the animated Saturday morning Beatles cartoon series, Boris Badenov, Mr. Bedrock, Toucan Sam, Morocco Mole, Secret Squirrel, Squiddley Diddley and too many other classic TV cartoon characters to mention. Thanks Carl for making the point!)
“It All Happens On Saturday” The Harry Stoneham Five” (From the BBC TV Parkinson’ Series). EMI Studio 2. These two blokes in a boat are living the high life, not a care in the world. Toasting their own good taste and good fortune.
Johnny Ray “A Sinner Am I” with Jack Parnell and his Orchestra. This is on the Australian Philips Label. (Perhaps not by chance my reflection is in the glass of this one.)
