The Riddler unmasked

August 7th, 2007 in 45 Picture Sleeves, Personalities, TV by lpcoverlover | 8 Comments

Riddle me this: Frank Gorshin was more than just The Riddler on Batman.   He was in some classic fifties exploitation, b-movies including “Hot Rod Girl,” “Runaway Daughters,” “Dragstrip Girl,” and “Invasion of the Saucer Men”.     He also brought the character Sammy Glick to life in the broadway production of “What Makes Sammy Run.”     He died in 2005, two days after his final performance in an episode of CSI.

I was fortunate enough to see Frank Gorshin portray a dead-on George Burns in “Say Goodnight, Gracie” shortly before he died, that very year in fact (I think). An amazingly talented man.

This record features his maniacal “Riddler” laugh a girl group backing and some really bad jokes. It’s campy fun, along the lines of “The Lurch”.

Also, his talent for dialect was spotted early. In the film, “Runaway Daughter”, he is in a crowd scene, mocking the one of the lead characters, by participating in an impromptu morality play. His sole line is done in a Russian accent: “What are you trying to do to my daughter?”

His cover ‘pose’ reminds me of when he fell into the aqua tank in the movie WHERE THE BOYS ARE in hopes of getting lucky with a sea siren!

I too saw Gorshin live on Broadway in “Say Goodnight Gracie”. And JD’s right, it was a dead on George Burns. It was super great! He should have won the Tony that year, imo. Saw him three times in it matter of fact and got to talk to him a few times afterwards. Love Frank!
