Wild wild West
An “incredibly strange” record and example of the celebrity “Golden Throats” series that has washed up stars taking on the hits of the day to usually disasterous or “so bad, it’s good” effect. This one is on Tower records, which put out some cool sixties rock and roll and some biker and surf soundtracks and the group isn’t bad musically. “Day Tripper” is a classic.
Mary Tyler Moore: The cheesecake years
Before she was LAURA PETRIE, the happy homemaker on the Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Tyler Moore modeled and was annonomously featured on (to date I count 13) low budget lp covers. She was so easy on the eyes that she seemed right at home on the covers of Latin music, Italian music and British music records for example.
Mexican Jayne Mansfield
This Jayne Mansfield photo shoot has yeilded a handful of album covers from Japan to Mexico.
Mamie Van Doren cover
Escandalo en la Universidad (Soundtrack) Gamma
This is a very rare record and a beautiful example of fifties cheesecake photography. This is a spanish version of the “B” movie “College Confidential” and it’s far superior in presentation to the U.S. issue. This one makes good use of star Mammie (sic) Van Doren!
Bettie Page
Ain’t Misbehavin’: Fats Waller’s Hits and Jazz Broadway Jazz Orchestra Halo
Bettie Page was on the cover of 3 Lps in fifties. The most famous uses the Bunny Yeager shot with the tigers, the other is cropped version of this photo. This is the sexiest and hardest to find. Halo is a great label for cheesecake covers. It was a budget label with smaltzy pop music and hits covered by orchestras. But many remain prime examples of early LPs with sexy models and pin-up photography. It would be incredible if anyone unearthed another lp from this period with Bettie on the cover. Maybe there’s one in another country that will show up some day.
