Rad to the bone
“I Get Around” TeeVee Records Released in 1978, this is actually a cheesey, exploito compilation of early 1960’s AM hits from the first wave of skate boarding (or “sidewalk surfing” as they used to say). Willie & The Wheels “Skateboard Craze” is probably the most curious thing on this album: It’s a complete rip-off of the Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ U.S.A.” (which is itself a ripoff of Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little Sixteen”), but with lyrics about the joys of skateboarding. Listen Up: “Skateboard Craze” Check out the glossary terms! Priceless. (Courtesy of lp cover lover, Kilwag at SkateAndAnnoy.com)
Crimea river
Here’s a neat one. “Buying a Car Ukrainian Style” Featuring Nester Shydolowsky and the Royal Polka Kings. On V Records. Found at the always fun and informative Learning to Share (via another cool site called RetroSpace)
Over-heated Chili Peppers
“On the Road with Rock ‘n Roll” Golden Crest Records (1957) Before Richie Valens, Mando and the Chili Peppers were perhaps the first Mexican-American rock & roll group. This is their only LP, though they continued to play around their home town of San Antonio into the Sixties. Their sound was a mix of New Orleans R&B and rock and roll. In 2004, after nearly 40 years and out of nowhere, the band played at the Ponderosa Stomp Music Festival in New Orleans.
