Go Man!

lpmikamitakeshi-576_1.jpg

One of my favorite covers and one of my favorite saxophonists (and on this session with one of my favorite piano players). Go Man! It’s “Sonny Criss” and Modern Jazz Imperial Records. Sonny Criss (as) Sonny Clark (p) Leroy Vinnegar (b) Lawrence Marable (d) Los Angeles, CA, July 10, 1956 (No, that’s not Criss on the motorbike)

Dick Smart “Smart and Continental” Everest Records.

(Is this a Smart Car?)   No it’s actually a BMW called and “Isetta” available only in Germany.   (Thanks Gerd Brunzema!)

Stepping out of the shadows

This is a really beautiful cover. The photo only begins to do it justice. The colors and tones of the actual record sleeve are stunning. Simple and elegant. Fifties.

Easy writers

Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson wrote some of the biggest Motown hits of the 60’s and 70’s including “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “California Soul,” “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” “You’re All I Need to Get By” and “Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand”.

Like a rock

dickiecara-zzx.jpg

“Irish singer Dickie Rock trying to look cool.   I’ve got an album with a slightly different cover (it’s cropped a bit). I have no idea what it sounds like, having no record player, I just keep it for the awesome badness of the cover.

“It’s a Chevrolet, man, it’s gotta be cool.”

“It’s a Corvair FFS….but nice jumper.”

Some years later (1975) several members of the band were murdered in an ambush by terrorists and members of the British Army, allegedly supervised by an undercover SAS man, who was himself subsequently murdered.   Cheers, Joe Smith, Bath, England”

Thanks Joe!
