Organist and bandleader Jean-Louis Benoît aka Lou Bennet “(Pentacostal) Feeling”  (1966) Philips Recorded  in Paris with RENÉ THOMAS (g), KENNY CLARKE (dr), THE PARIS ALL JAZZ STARS and DONALD BYRD on trumpet, originally released by FONTANA (PHILIPS in France) and re-issued by EMARCY/UNIVERSAL CLASSICS/GITANES.

As a sideman Lou recorded and / or performed with JACK SELS, KING CURTIS, HERB GELLER, J. J. JOHNSON, MEMPHIS SLIM, EDDIE “LOCKJAW” DAVIS, DONALD BYRD, LEO WRIGHT, TETE MONTOLIU and IDRIS MUHAMMAD.   Bennett has toured and performed at many European Jazz festivals and in films, but has made only one appearance in the USA – at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1964.  Lou passed away February 10, 1997 in a hospital outside of Paris.

“Porgy and Bess”  Dianne Carroll and The Andre Previn Trio  United Artists Records

I don’t think of Ms. Carroll so much for her jazz vocal chops as much as her beauty and  the TV show she starred in – Julia.  I think she broke the color barrier as a black woman starring in her own series (and she was a single mom on the show), but that didn’t mean much to me.  At 8, she just seemed cool and I was in love with her.   Thanks for reminding me Ruben.

Charles Wright and The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band (Aka, “Hot Heat and Sweet Groove”) (1968)  Warner Records.  Includes “Spreadin’ Honey,” and “Fried Okra”.    Bill Cosby writes the liner notes here as he brought the band to Warner Bros. after they backed him on his comedy LP “Silver Throat”.  They were the first soul group to be signed by Warner Bros.  The band’s biggest hit was “Express Yourself” which was on their second album out a year later.  Love it, love it, love it.  And what a funky cover!
