Got this album from a thrift store specifically because of that warped song title, “Shooting of Governor Wallace (Jack – Bobby – Martin Luther too)”. Get the impression he was hoping it would be the next “Abraham, Martin & John”.

This is one classic incredibly strange record. Picked it up in a thrift store in Atlanta. Ken “Nevada” Maines is listed as “Musical Imagination”. No dates, but the p.o. box is 7372 LV, Nevada 89101. Released on Smile Records. Recorded in Las Vegas and Hollywood. Jerry Cole (hot rod lps, byrds sessions etc) plays guitar. Ray Pohlman (LA session guy, Pet Sounds) on bass are the 2 names I recognize from my lp collection. “The shooting of Governor Wallace – Jack, Bobby, Martin Luther too” is one of the weirdest tunes, somewhere beyond the butthole surfers in my book. I thought about sending a copy to Jello Biafra years ago, he’d appreciate this one. Elmer Plinger (Buddy Ray) – as listed on the back cover, why does he need 2 names is the vocalist. Contact me, and i’ll mp3 it.

So, Space Monkey… you say as a young child you lived in Las Vegas????

Hmmm… now that explains everything! HA! HA!… just kidding.

Seriously, Las Vegas has a great story and I’m sure you know or heard a lot. I never lived there but back in the late 80s and early 90s, I had the pleasure (or pain) to have worked at some clubs and frequent the old Bally’s performing with comedian Sam kinison. So, I got a little taste of the local “vibe”. I loved the buffets at the adjacent casinos. (That’s me) “Save those coupons!” Lots of fun! Years later I went back and couldn’t believe how much it had grown. “Unbelievable!” Some of my former Californian friends had moved there because the real-estate was cheap. I hope they don’t run out of water. They forget it’s in a desert!

Any way… that cover is a real “time piece” coverlover! Early 70s???

I am lucky enough to have seen every one of these signs with my own eyes. Which is a lucky stroke, cuz A LOT of them probably don’t exist any more.

the Golden Nugget is obscured, and the ground view of the Flamingo was a lot more impressive than the sign.

I lived in Vegas until I was about 12 or 13– early 80′s. Vegas is a very different place than it was when I last saw it. At least my favorite landmark, the giant moving cowboy, is still standing, the last I heard.
