Tuesday, 4/14/09

When I was in high school, I listened to Mr. Getzoff play each week on the "Lawrence Welk Show." His bowing was the Leopold Auer style, which was different from the Franco-Belgian style that I learned from my violin teacher, the late Elizabeth Mills of Altadena, California. (She sounded similar to Zino Francescati.)

Mr. Getzoff has beautiful tone and technique. L.A. studio string players are among the very finest. Their sightreading skills are legendary, and most of them remember the A 440 pitch without an outside source.

A little more info for those who care...Jimmy Getzoff has appeared as a sideman on records by every manner of artist from Dr. John to Billy Ray Cyrus to Frank Zappa...he also has about the finest tone of any violinist I've ever heard. He is a brilliant musical artist. Check out his clips with Welk on YouTube to see him in action (Richard Rodgers Medley, Gypsy Love Song, etc.).

Too bad neither of the above smart-asses have heard Getzoff play...or maybe they wrongly assume that Welk didn't have good players or that the band wasn't capable of excellent music, including jazz on occasion. Oh, it must be fun to be so self-consciously hip AND ignorant at the same time.
